The National Tribal Justice Resource Center (NTJRC) held its Technology Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 2-4, 2005. The conference was held at the Chateau Sonesta New Orleans. This conference is the only conference of its kind dedicated to bringing together tribal courts and technology. *
The
Conference had two tracks for tribal court technology and was held
in conjunction with a technology vendor expo and NAICJA's Judges Training
Judges Series: Court Clerks Training and Certification.
Case
Management and Other Technologies for the Court (Track 1):
This track was designed for judges, court administrators, and clerks
who are considering improving and enhancing their courts through the
aquisition of new or newer technologies. The sessions covered the
benefits and efficiencies gained by using technology, including automated
case management and records technology; information for aquiring the
right technology for your current and future needs; various issues and
considerations for implementation; development of requests for proposals;
and action planning skills.
Using
Computers and Internet in the Court (Track 2): Designed for
beginners to intermediates. This track exposed practitioners - including
judges, court administrators, clerks, IT departments and other justice
personnel to several levels of technology, such as using the internet
and decision making systems for judicial research, developing forms,
word processing, database administration, website design, development
and theory, networking, trends in technology and security. In this track
we worked hands-on in a computer lab environment and left
the groundwork for a number of technology projects.
Vendor
Exhibits and Showcase Sessions: We added this feature
because many participants kept requesting more in-depth time with vendors
to see their wares in action and to have vendors demonstrate the advantages
and capabilities of certain technologies. Both the showcases and vendor expositions were designed to
allow ALL participants the chance to meet.
NAICJA’s
Court Clerks Training and Certification: This course
from NAICJA was held in conjunction with the NTJRC Case management
and Court Technology Workshop. This course was designed for newer,
less experienced court clerks who were looking for information and
training in the basic skills needed to manage a court, its cases,
dockets and records. The purpose of this course was to identify
and define the components of effective case management, including
filing, records management, scheduling, creating records of proceedings,
records retention, etc. After this session, participants were
be able to identify effective and efficient methods for their
Tribal Court Case management from beginning to end. This course
was for clerks who work with both manual systems and simple computerized
systems.
The
National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) is the largest
organization representing Tribal Judges and Tribal Courts. NAICJA was
incorporated in 1969, making it one of the oldest Indian organizations
in existence. NAICJA has member Judges from Tribes throughout the United
States. The mission of NAICJA is to strengthen and enhance all Tribal
justice systems through improvement and development of Tribal Courts and
Tribal Court Judges. The National Tribal Justice Resource Center was established
by the National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) under
a one-year grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) of the U.S.
Department of Justice on September 1, 2000.
